10 legendary tennis rules that are myths? - Steve Landon

  1. You can’t serve underarm - Not true. You can serve anyway you like (almost) as long the ball doesn’t hit the ground first (see Nick Kyrigos v Rafael Nadal matches (he does it all the time and it drives Rafa mental)).

  2. If the ball crosses the net, bounces and then blows or spins back onto my side without you touching it, it is my point - True. It is also the only time your opponent is allowed to reach over the net to hit a ball.

  3. In a game of doubles I am allowed to serve last in a set and then serve first again instead of my partner in the next set - True. You can change the order in which you serve for every set played.

  4. The tiebreak acts as the service game for the player who wins it - False. The tiebreak is counted as the service game for the player who serves first.

5. If I hit a lob that bounces off a floodlight and in to court without my opponent being able to return it then I win the point - False. If your ball hits anything but the net (including net posts) before it hits the other side of the court you lose the point.

6. It’s a tough shot but I am allowed to volley an opponent’s serve - False. You are not allowed to volley a serve.

7. If my opponent jumps and hits their serve above baseline and inside the court area then I can claim the point - False. You must make contact with the court before contacting a serve for it to be considered a “fault”.

8. My opponent hits the ball twice so the point is mine - True and False. The rule states that the ball may contact the strings or racquet a second time but the shot must be completed in “one continuous movement”.

9. If I win the toss I must decide to either serve or receive - False. You can choose those options, or the end you wish to play from first, or you can decide to let you opponent choose.

10. During a game we played two points from the same side accidentally. We have to finish the game from the “wrong” sides and keep the same score until the next game when we will start again correctly - True. Any point played in good faith stands in tennis. Mistakes happen and you just carry on and put it right in the next game.
