Adult Tennis

We are a vibrant and busy club with activities going on every week of the year. Be it league matches, social events or coaching just to name a few, there will always be something going on in Newtown Park Tennis club. While below we talk about the various regular events in the club, don’t forget the everyday enjoyable option of simply booking a court and arranging an hour of doubles or singles with your friends and fellow members. It’s usually easy to find a free court at NPTC, and you’ll enjoy the practice, the exercise and the laughs – not to mention the escape from all of the other stuff you could be doing!

Women’s Tennis

Ladies’ Morning

Long established and very popular, Ladies’ Morning runs from 10-12 every Wednesday, all year long except for July.  Absolutely everyone is welcome, the cost is €2 which goes towards the women’s social fund; racquets are thrown in on the half hour, and there is a tea/coffee/goodies rota run by regular Wednesday players.  A great way to get to know other members!

Tuesday night tennis

Tuesday night is typically women’s night on the courts.  At regular intervals throughout the year more formal sessions are organised, with a few consecutive Tuesdays where you sign up in advance; other times it’s just a throw-in like Wednesday morning.  Keep an eye on texts and emails for information. Once again, the cost is €2 to cover lights.

DLTC League Tennis

Newtown Park is very active in the women’s section of the DLTC leagues, entering between 4 and 6 teams in each of the main leagues: Winter League (January – doubles); Summer League (May – singles and doubles); Over-35s League (September – doubles) and Floodlight League (October – singles and doubles).  Winter and Senior Leagues are played on Sunday afternoons, Summer and Floodlight Leagues on weekday evenings.

Charity League

This is a women’s doubles league that runs on Monday and Tuesday mornings twice a year, in Spring and Autumn.  There are beginner and advanced sections; the ‘non-league’ group is a great place to start if you don’t think you’re quite ready for full-on DLTC league.  Note: the charity league circuit is almost as well known for its high standards of baking as for its enjoyable tennis!

Five-mile League

A friendly doubles league run between local clubs, for entry-level-league or non-league players.  It takes place on Sunday evenings in May/June – and you never have to drive more than, well, five miles!

Social

The women of Newtown Park are nothing if not sociable.  Some regular dates in the women’s calendar are as follows:

  • Summer tournament and lunch – usually late June

  • Summer evening tournament and supper – usually late June

  • Women’s Christmas party – mid-December (no tennis at all; this is when you get to dress up, eat, drink, dance, and generally razzle-dazzle’ em!)

Men’s Tennis

Men’s Morning

Long established and very popular, Men’s Morning runs from 10-12 every Saturday.  Absolutely everyone is welcome, racquets are thrown in on the half hour, and there is always an option to sit out and enjoy tea/coffee and a chat either after your tennis, or if numbers are uneven.  A great way to get to know other members!

Monday night tennis

Monday night is typically men’s night on the courts.  Monday night tennis is more competitive than Saturday mornings.  To get involved, contact the men’s social committee (via the Men’s Captain) and you’ll be added to a rota according to your standard, and will get to play about every two weeks.  Note that play goes ahead regardless of weather! There’s a minimal charge, details when you sign up.

DLTC League Tennis

Newtown Park is very active in the men’s section of the DLTC leagues, entering between 2 and 4 teams in each of the main leagues: Winter League (January – doubles); Summer League (May – singles and doubles); Over-35s League (September – doubles) and Floodlight League (October – singles and doubles).  Winter and Senior Leagues are played on Sunday mornings, Summer and Floodlight Leagues on weekday evenings.

Easter Cup

A doubles league run between local clubs, for non-league players.  It takes place on Saturday mornings in springtime and is always played in a spirit of friendly (or sometimes ferocious!) rivalry.  Finals night is usually on a Friday evening in April and is hosted by the winning club from the previous year. Refreshments on finals night are always top-notch as is the camaraderie and competitive banter.

Social

The men of Newtown Park are not only sociable they are also quite inventive! Some regular dates in the men’s calendar are as follows:

  • Every bank holiday Monday, the men’s tennis switches to the morning (10-12) and is followed by a breakfast BBQ

  • Craft beer tastings and wine tastings have been arranged in recent years and are growing in popularity

  • Talks are given on occasion by a member on his particular area of expertise

  • The Christmas Party.  This event includes music, food and drink as you would expect, but often also features some creative endeavour involving theatre, film or other media, which takes weeks to plan and is always shrouded in secrecy beforehand.
